한국 HP PSG는 지난 2월17일 용산 엔비디아 데모센터에서 모바일 슈퍼컴퓨팅 기자 간담회를 열었습니다. 일반 노트북과 동일한 모습의 '모바일 워크스테이션'을 이용해서 슈퍼컴퓨터에서나 가능하다고 여겨지던 연산 작업을 보여주었는데요, 모바일 칩셋의 성능이 이제 데스크탑 못지 않게 발전했다고는 하지만 슈퍼컴퓨팅까지 되는 것을 직접 보니 대단하다고 밖에 생각되지 않았습니다. 이제 성능에 있어서 만큼은 모바일과 데스크탑의 경계가 허물어졌다고 해도 과언이 아닐듯 합니다.

간담회에서 소개된 모바일 워크스테이션 중 최상급 모델인 HP Elitebook 8740W는 기존 HP Elitebook 8740W에서 사용된 NVIDIA Quadro FX3800M 보다 한층 더 강력한 FX5000M을 탑재하였습니다. 320개의 CUDA 코어를 갖는 FX5000M은 240개의 CUDA 코어를 갖던 FX3800M보다 훨씬 뛰어난 성능을 보여 주면서 휴대가 불가능했던 워크스테이션의 한계를 깨고 언제 어디서나 사용이 가능한 모바일 워크스테이션을 이루어 냈습니다.
